We are a community of young adult Orthodox Christians located in the heart of our nation’s capitol in Washington, DC.
The mission of the Greek Orthodox Young Adult League (YAL) is to cultivate and educate our young adults, leading them to the fullness of the Faith and likeness of God. By utilizing the four circles of Christian living – Worship, Witness, Service, and Fellowship, young adults are integrated into the life of the Church, enabling them to become active members of the body of Christ. We are here to serve Saint Sophia, the Orthodox community, and provide a welcoming, fun and loving group for all to enjoy. Whether you are new to the area or have been a long term resident, come join us! We look forward to seeing you at our events!
We have a very large and active group! Members are between the ages of 18-40, live in the DC metro area, are Greek and/or Orthodox, or are spiritually curious! YAL allows young adults to connect with other Orthodox groups in the area, nurtures spiritual growth, and provides an outlet for those wanting to serve their Church and local community.
Worship / Witness
We have many different events to worship and learn about our faith. Some of these include a young adult spiritual retreat in Lake Anna, VA, discussions with Fr. Dimitri about issues surrounding our faith, monastery retreats and trips to the Archdiocese in New York, religious film screenings, and special events and educational programming with religious scholars and leaders.
We have many service projects to help both our St. Sophia and local community. Projects include volunteering at the annual St. Sophia Greek Festival, assisting our Orthodox charity and outreach assemblies (IOCC, OCMC, OCPM, OCN, OCF), GOYA mentoring, and participating in local community service projects.
We believe it’s important to have a strong and united group, while having fun! We have events for everyone including our annual events – Fall Kick Off Party, Thanksgiving Potluck Dinner, Christmas Party, Spiritual Retreat (Lake Anna, VA), Lenten Palm Sunday Potluck Dinner, and Annapolis Day. Other events may include brunch after church, test kitchen events, happy hours/wine tastings, sporting events, and various other seasonal activities and social outings.
